About Chess Club

The Chess Club is excited for another great year of Hunter chess! We currently anticipate that chess club meetings will resume in late September or early October 2024. As in previous years, we plan to meet every Wednesday afternoon in the Hunter cafeteria after school until 4:45pm. The chess club is a great way to have fun, learn, and play lots of chess! Playing chess can improve academic skills such as analysis, creativity, and reasoning and can enhance life skills such as perseverance, resilience, and assertiveness. Our chess club is sponsored by the Hunter PTA, led by a team of enthusiastic parent volunteers, and is open to all Hunter students!

The chess club provides instruction for new and experienced  players. If you have a Kindergarten or first grade student who is interested in learning chess and who is not yet signed up for chess club, please contact Coach Mark so he can create a ChessKid account for them. Additionally, please consider Hunter's beginning chess elective course, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn chess during the school day!

Parents of chess club members are asked to commit to volunteering at least twice per school year per child. Parent volunteers are needed to help run the Wednesday afternoon club meetings - no knowledge of chess is required! Volunteers must be approved by WCPSS before supporting club meetings in person.

How to Join

Interested families are asked to register for chess club via this form. This year, membership will be pay what you can, with a suggested contribution of $35 per student. This helps to cover a ChessKid subscription, a USCF membership, and the club’s operating costs. Payments can be made through MemberHub or by personal check made out to the Hunter PTA, with “Chess Club” indicated on the note line. Checks can be dropped off at the Hunter front office.
